Daniel and Crusher stopped. They had been walking at a furious pace for four hours, getting away from the psychic fumbles of Agent Justice. Crusher was determined and pushed them on despite Daniel’s obvious exhaustion. Daniel fell to the ground. His legs throbbed. Crusher stared at the boy.

“Come on— we’ve got to keep moving,” Crusher grunted.

“Why?” Daniel complained.

“Kill’s forces are here. There will be more coming soon.”

“More Champions too?” Daniel asked hopefully.

“Yeah—probably,” Crusher said, taking off his pack and setting it down. He could see that Daniel needed a break.

“Then why don’t we wait? You can just drop me off and go,” Daniel said as he took out his canteen.

“Yeah, because that worked so well last time.”

“No— now I understand the plan. It will work.”

“Not likely. They’ve found the safe house by now and it’s probably toast. Not sure how far away the next one is. Besides we don’t want to get in the middle of a full-blown conflagration.”

“Oh,” Daniel said.

Crusher scanned the horizon—they were nestled behind a stack of rusted cars but he wanted to be sure they were out of sight.

“Earlier you said you knew that Dreadknight,” Crusher said, momentarily satisfied they were concealed. “What did you mean by that?”

“I meant I knew him,” Daniel said. “His name was Ashton James. He was from Territory Five. He went to school with me. He was just a few years older than me.”

“That doesn’t make any sense, Daniel.”

“You don’t believe me?”

“The Rollie must have just looked like him. Rollies are usually Outlanders— brainwashed Outlanders.”

“I know it was him. I know it. He was pretty popular. Lots of girls liked him,” Daniel said, remembering Ashton in the library with that girl Kelly Strang. It was so long ago but he knew it was the same boy.

“That just doesn’t make any sense,” Crusher said but with a hesitant tone.

“How could he be a Rollie?” Daniel wondered out loud. “How?”

“Good question.”

‘Maybe like that Alliance officer who let you go.”

“What?” Crusher said, shocked and suddenly suspicious. “How did you know—?”

“When you were trapped, he turned your mind-band off,” Daniel said matter-of-factly.

“How do you—?” Crusher started and couldn’t stop himself. He grabbed Daniel and lifted him off the ground. “How do you know that, Daniel? No one knows that. How could you know that?”

“The telepath— Agent Justice— she showed me—back there before we left—.”

“What else did she show you?” Crusher asked, angry and surprised. He was an inch away from Daniel’s face and the boy could see Crusher’s teeth and feel his angry hot breath. He could eat me if he wanted, thought Daniel in a flash of fright.

“You— fighting some Dreadknights… with Ultra,” Daniel stuttered. “The man in the shadows… you were tied up.”

Daniel was scared, dangling from this giant’s arms—he knew the man could break him like a twig.

“Did the telepath show you what else happened?” Crusher said, still yelling. “Before I ran?”

“The man had a gun. “

“Pointed at my head— when someone points a gun at your head and says run, you do what he wants.
